On 12 of September 2018, around 1000Hrs EAT, 6 terrorists belonging to the Al-Qaeda affiliate Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen (HSM) were killed by Kenya’s Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) after they attempted to ambush the unit convoy on a surveillance and water fetching mission in El-Ram area in Mandera County of North Eastern Kenya.
The ASTU was conducting surveillance around the 10 kilometer radius area and near Dabacity town when an improvised explosive device planted by the terrorists along the MSR detonated but could not destroy the vehicle. The terrorists then fired an rocket propelled grenade targeting the ASTU armored vehicle.
ASTU Unit members were reinforced by General Service Unit Members and successfully conducted a counter attack using automatic weapons fire and managed to kill 6 militants. 5 AK-47 riffles and one RPG launcher was recovered from the dead terrorists.
