On 8th of August 2018 at around 0845HRS EAT, The Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Shabaab Mujahideen (HSM) detonated an remote controlled improvised explosive device (RCIED) targeting a Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) army patrol party in the general area of Bodhei, Ijara District, Lower Garissa County, North Eastern Kenya. The patrol unit was using the Bodhei-Baragoni MSR. The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser was destroyed by the RCIED at Kwa Omolo Bridge.
According to intelligence reports, 7 soldiers were injured after their vehicle was destroyed by the explosive while they were using the MSR. An unspecified number of soldiers sustained life threatening injuries. Preliminary reports indicate 4 soldiers could have succumbed to injuries.

Lower Garissa remains a fluid theater. The terror group has a presence there through small terrorist cells. The terror group continues to demonstrate that it has adapted to the environment and that they’ll avoid direct contact with army due to their capability inferiority, instead, will employ guerilla tactics to ram up their insurgency.
