Libya’s eastern-based army has confirmed that its air force carried out three airstrikes on terrorist targets near the city of Sirte, some 450 km east of the capital Tripoli. The airstrikes were conducted on al Qaeda terrorists believed to have fled from Benghazi.
The military spokesman Ahmad Mismari said in a statement that the airstrikes were precise and our fighter jets returned to their bases safely. The statement further said that several terrorist positions were destroyed and large casualties were reported.
Sirte and the surrounding areas are marred by different terror organizations including Islamic State and the Benghazi Defense Brigades, a coalition of extremist groups that fights the army in the eastern city Benghazi, has launched several attacks in eastern cities in Libya.
