U.N migration agency says it has already begun installation of 10 digit bio-metric fingerprint readers at Mogadishu international airport and seaport as part of efforts to boost Somalia’s border security.
The move is crucial as it will reduce cases of trafficking, terrorism, smuggling and other attempts at exploitation. The plan targets eight ports of entry.
The Horn of Africa nation currently has the technology to record migrant bio-data through the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS).
Somalia is also in the process of building and increasing the capacity of Immigration and Naturalization Directorate as it has a high level of fluid internal movement of regular and irregular migrants.
For a long time, terrorists and other criminals have capitalized in the loopholes found in the border management, with the improvement of security measures and capacity of its immigration ministry, Somalia is expected to experience less illegal migrants.
