The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has sanctioned South Sudan’s Defence Minister, Kuol Manyang Juuk on claims that he is violating the cessation of hostilities agreement.
According to UNSC, Sudan People’s Liberation Army forces (SPLA) under the command of General Juuk has severally violated agreement of cessation of hostilities, human access and protection of civilians that was signed between the government and the rebel faction in 2017.
The 15-UNSC members issued the statement in the wake of a meeting that was held at the UN headquarters in New York on Saturday (26th May 2018).
The statement claimed that Gen. Juuk provided military support to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army-North (SPLM/A-N) to attack the town of Pagak, a South Sudan rebel base near the Ethiopian border.
The UNSC also sanctioned South Sudan’s Cabinet Affairs minister Martin Elia Lomoro for threatening critical journalists in the country. The conduct of these leaders, UNSC said, fuelled South Sudan’s ongoing civil war.
Meanwhile, sanctions on Gen Koang Rambang Cho, a rebel official accused of leading a recent attack in Bieh state remains in place.
