A US drone strike has reportedly killed several al Shabaab fighters near Bariire town located 55km southwest of Mogadishu. The strike was conducted in the wee hours of Wednesday and targeted a village controlled by al Qaeda-affiliated al Shabaab.
The missiles fired by the drones are said to have hit an al Shabaab training camp embedded in the village where the militants were killed. Al-Shabab group has several training camps near Bariire town which is Al-Shabab stronghold town of Lower Shabelle region.
This is the second airstrike by the US against al Shabaab militants in different locations in Somalia as security is intensified ahead of the holy month of Ramadhan. U.S. government has intensified its military attacks against Al-Shabab and ISIS in recent months after Somali government called for intensive operations against the groups.
