The Federal Government of Somalia has made a decision to halt and end military cooperation between her and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after political and diplomatic tensions erupted between the two.
The immediate cause of the tensions between Somalia and UAE can be credited to the recent seizure of close to $10 million cash from an Emirate plane at Mogadishu airport. Somali officials have accused the UAE of stirring the political pot seeing as the money is believed to have been being delivered to support former Lower House Speaker Mohamed Osman Jowari. Jowari had been engaged in a political tussle against Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo which is viewed as a move to destabilize Somalia politically.
The Somali Ministry of Defense will take over the training of UAE-trained Somali forces. UAE and Somalia signed an agreement on military cooperation in November 2014 in which Abu Dhabi was to pay the salaries of SNA soldiers and trainers.
