Qatar has announced plans to spend $3.71bn to purchase 28 military helicopters in its latest attempts to improve its defense buy making high profile purchases of military equipment. The delivery of the helicopters should begin in 2022.
Italian defense contractor Leonardo will act as the main contractor in the deal to purchase the NH90 helicopters that are set to enhance the capabilities and efficiency of Qatari air force.
Qatar has been isolated by a group of neighboring countries and former allies led by Saudi Arabia for the past nine months in a political, diplomatic and economic dispute. Thus, Qatar has launched a five-year development plan that focuses on making the Gulf nation more self-reliant in the face of a boycott by other countries in the region.
