Somalia’s Federal Government security forces have launched a major security operation in Beledweyne city, the regional capital of Hiran province following the recent attacks by the al Qaeda’s affiliate in Somalia, al Shabaab.
Government officials have echoed that the operation was aimed at beefing up the security of the town, capture and neutralize al Shabaab elements in the area.
The troops have managed to arrested several al Shabaab militants arrested as well as seized large cache of weapons and bombmaking materials believed to be used by militants against the military and civilian population.
The security sweeps are expected to continue in coming days to ensure that all al Shabaab members and sympathizers are neutralized.
The troops are also receiving back up from Djibouti soldiers serving under AMISOM to ensure that the area and its environs are safe.
