A senior al Shabaab commander, Abdinur Moalim Hassan has announced his defection from the terror organization and has subsequently renounced the violence advanced by the group. He decided to take the step in mid-January and has only come out to urge his former colleagues to desert the group and take advantage of President Farmajo’s amnesty offer.
Speaking to the media for the first time since his defection, Hassan said that he has deep regrets for his actions and is very repentant for the wrongs and violence he committed in different regions of Somalia.
The increasing defections come as high-level security agencies hold meetings to forge a strategy geared at defeating the al Shabaab in Gedo and Juba areas in Jubbaland state.
