December 5, 2017, Latest reports from South Sudan indicate that four Kenyans who had been jailed for life at last have been freed are expected back in the country on Wednesday. The four Kenyans got life sentence in South Sudan for allegedly defrauding Juba government.
Kenya government intervened and Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Monica Juma is already in South Sudan to receive them. The four namely’ Mr Anthony Mwadime, Mr Ravi Ramesh, Mr Boniface Muriuki and Mr Anthony Keya were sentenced to life imprisonment over embezzlement of government funds.
Reports indicate that the four got their freedom following talks between Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Salva Kiir. The two leaders had a talk in State House Nairobi after Kenyatta’s Inauguration.
The four Kenyans were in a group— including 12 South Sudan nationals— who were cumulatively jailed for 67 years.
The families of the four had appealed to the government and the United Nations Human Rights Council to intervene.
