AMISOM has commenced a five-day training for Somali officials on Countering Violent Extremism and the processes of reintegrating defectors in Kenya’s capital. The training camp draws twenty participants from Somalia’s Defector Rehabilitation Programme (DRP), on basic concepts and components of the Defector Rehabilitation Programme.
At the end of the workshop, the trainees should be in a position to identify actors and institutions involved in countering violent extremism. The training is aimed at ensuring that defectors are well rehabilitated and integrated into the society without the chance of falling back to old habits after reintegrating into the community. The training will equip the rehabilitators with the knowledge to ensure that the defectors are genuine and not undercover terrorists.
The voluntary defection, rehabilitation and integration into the society is a very important exercise as it saves the lives of former fighters and their families as well as help in the elimination of radical elements causing a security threat to Somalia.
