The United Kingdom has provided and delivered 20,000 emergency shelter kits for over 140,000 drought displaced Somalis priced at over US$1 million. The kits which have started to arrive in Somalia are also expected to provide a level of security and protection for some of Somalia’s most vulnerable people.
According to officials the kits will offer relief to almost a seventh of those displaced as a result of the current drought and will be delivered in partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council.
The humanitarian situation in Somalia remains critical – with over 943,000 people displaced since November 2016. This number continues to rise. The UK has committed over US$250 million in emergency relief and supplies.
