GOBWEYN, Somalia – Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab terrorists dealt a huge blow after they were successfully repulsed by AU troops after an attempted dawn attack against military outpost belonging to the Africa Union forces (AMISOM).
According to AU troops’ sources, the militants had targeted a military Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Gobweyn town in Lower Shabelle but were met with stiff resistance.
Fire fight ensued for several minutes with heavy artillery and machines guns being used from both sides.
Military reports indicate nearly a dozen militants were neutralized and several fled with gun wounds. Few AU troops also suffered some gun injuries from the Sunday morning militant ambush.
Al-Shabaab that relies on propaganda had said it on its pro-media channels that it had briefly taken the control Gobweyn, a claim that the regional officials and AMISOM commanders strongly denied as “baseless and propaganda statement”.
Gobweyn, is a strategic area on the main highway that links Shalanbod to Bulo Mareer, serves as an important route for AMISOM forces to transport their supplies between Mogadishu and Barawe.
