Nigeria’s Secret Police– Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday evening said it had foiled a plot by ISIL-linked Boko Haram operatives to bomb United Kingdom and the United States Embassies in the country’s capital Abuja.
The police also said they thwarted an attack targeting Western establishment in Nigeria’s capital and arrested 5 Boko Haram operatives in the intelligence led raid.
Confirming the incident, Tony Opuiyo, the spokesman of Nigeria’s secret police, in a statement said that at least five Boko Haram militants connected to the plot have been arrested in Abuja and central Nigeria’s Benue state.
Also Opuiyo noted on Police intensified counter-terrorism operations saying on March 25-26, 2017, the service busted a ring of ISIL -linked Boko Haram members based in Benue state and the FCT” or Federal Capital Territory.
The terror group had perfected plans to attack the U.K. and American embassies and other Western interests in Abuja. During the operation to thwart this plan, five key suspects, namely Isa Jibril, Jibril Jibril, Abu Omale Jibril, Halidu Sule, and Amhodu Salifu, were arrested Opuiyo added while another 20-year-old Boko Haram fighter, Adamu Datti, were tracked down in the town of Fika in the northeastern Yobe state on March 22 Opuiyo added.
The US and UK governments separately have expressed gratitude to Nigeria for protecting their embassies in Nigeria
