9/2/2017, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is the next elected president of Somalia.
Farmajo, a former Prime Minister (PM) was second in the round of voting trailing behind the incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Sheikh Sharif Ahmed and Omar ABdirashid were neck and neck in the first round with 49 and 37 votes respectively.
When the second round of voting was complete, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo won with an astounding 184 votes while his opponents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sheikh Sharif Ahmed garnered 119 combined votes.
A third round was set to take place but minutes before the voting commenced , Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced that he will gracefully concede the election to a roaring applause.
Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, has long been praised as the people’s candidate in this election. In 2011, when he was ousted from his post, thousands of Mogadishu residents took to the streets in protest.
Upon announcement Farmajo win, thousands of residents lined the streets of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu and lighted up its skies in celebratory gunfire on Wednesday evening rejoicing his historic rise to the Presidency.
Farmajo enters the office of the president at a time Somalia is facing challenges of Al-Shabaab militancy with AU peacekeepers supporting SNA to battle the terror group.
