Latest military intelligence reports from Somalia indicate that a senior mid-level Al-Shabaab commander has handed himself up to the Jubbaland forces.
The militant leader identified as Sheikh Mohamed has surrendered himself on Tuesday, claiming he now wanted to live in peace with the rest of the people in Somalia saying he regretted the brainwashing in the terror camps.
According to Jubbaland officials, he was Al-Shabaab commander in charge of zakat (Islamic levy on wealth) collection in this region.
The officer said the government will welcome those Al-Shabaab militants who defect but those still with the group will be fought and eliminated.
This comes days after Jubaland State forces and Al-Shabaab fighters clashed in the outskirt of Kismayo and captured three key areas including Janay-Abdale and Ber-hano.
