Somali police forces have defused and dismantled several landmines planted by Al-Shabaab in Beledweyne in central Somalia.
Al-Shabaab had planted landmines on key roads frequently used by SNA and AMISOM forces.
Al-Shabaab blamed for the landmines which also have claimed lives of innocent civilians.
“Our security forces have defused several landmines planted by Al-Shabaab fighters,” Hiraan police commissioner, Isack Ali Abdulle was quoted saying by Somalia media.
He noted that security teams successfully defused the landmines and averted potential attacks. He also noted that the exercise will continue and more an extensive exercise will be done the road which links between ElGayl and Kalabeer localities widely used by transport convoys.
Abdulle also called on local residents who may have any information on crime activities or any intelligence on possible attacks to inform the relevant authorities reassuring them their identities will remain sealed and in confidence.
Al-Shabaab fighters who are fighting government officials as well as AU peacekeeping troops in Somalia have in the past carried out a series of attacks mostly associated with planting landmines.
