Germany indicted a man believed to have joined the extremist group Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
German federal prosecutors on Tuesday accused the 28 German man of joining the Somali-based Islamist group Al-Shabaab on charges of terrorism.
The suspect whose name has been withheld in accordance with German privacy rules and only identified as Abshir Ahmed was arrested at Frankfurt airport as he returned home in July.
The prosecutors said the man is believed to have joined the Al Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab in Somalia in 2012 where he underwent weapons and military training. The prosecution further noted that the suspect was deployed in a defensive position in the terror group only to be forced out of his post due to health challenges.
Al-Shabab is waging an insurgency against Somalia’s western-backed government but Somali army supported by AMISOM troops deployed in various sectors have weakened the terrorist group; dislodging them from several localities which have been under their control for years.
