and CID boss Mosses Teben – File PhotoFollowing the Somali-based Islamist Al-Shabaab and their cell in NEP Kenya targeting communication masts, security has been scaled-up to prevent the militant group from destroying the communication infrastructure.
According to NEP Regional Coordinator Mohamud Saleh, Al-Shabaab targeted communication masts belonging to Safaricom in Lafey and Fino in Mandera.
The destruction of the communication infrastructure is strategic in case of an attack/ambush; communication is cut-off and subsequently frustration of the security operations.
To preempt such an occurrence, permanent ground security operations have been set on the perceived hotspots along the Kenya-Somalia border.
Saleh noted that Al-Shabaab out of desperation to pull out an attack, the militant have resulted in sabotaging communication infrastructure as recently witnessed in their incursions on the border towns of Mandera.
Saleh lauded security agents’ efforts in securing the border area noting a few attacks being reported in the past 14 months.
Also, he noted the collaboration between security agents in thwarting plans by militants to bomb water pipelines in NEP towns saying security officers managed to secure them.
