The situation in South Sudan remains shaky after the government of South Sudan said it rejects draft resolution at the UN Security Council calling for deployment of regional troops in Juba to contain conflicts.
According to Information Minister, Michael Makuei, deployment of a regional force supervised by United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) would be unacceptable saying the move would undermine the country’s sovereignty.
The United States has sponsored the draft resolution being discussed by UN Security Council in New York. IGAD had also discussed South Sudan situation at recent meeting held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia where they Heads of state proposed a regional protection troops to be deployed.
Makuei alleged broadening the powers of the UNMISS force would be unacceptable to South Sudan.
The U.S.-backed effort to extend and expand the UNMISS force's authority "seriously undermines the sovereignty of the Republic of South Sudan as a U.N. member state," Makuei said,” noting that the Transitional Government of National Unity strongly objects such a move. “The text is very clear, and it's turning South Sudan into a U.N. protectorate, and this is a situation that we will not accept."
