Kidnapping is a rising phenomenon in Nigeria especially the country’s southern region.
Schoolchildren and women usually fall victims besides kidnappers are targeting high profile individuals in the society and especially in the political class.
Nigerian Senate has recommended the death penalty for anyone involved in kidnapping menace in a move aimed to stymie the criminal rackets in in the country including the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists group.
Senate recommendation comes day after police rescued ex-Senator Anisulowo, who was kidnapped in southwestern Ogun State.
The death penalty recommendation was made Senate lawmakers and on Wednesday was unanimously adopted in a report of the Senate Joint Committee on police affairs, national security and intelligence.
Nigeria’s most prominent abduction was the April 14, 2014, whereby 276 Chibok schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram militants now affiliated to the Middle East-based Islamic State (ISIS).
Up to date, only 57 of those girls have so far been accounted for, with 219 still believed to be held in captivity clearly indicating the veracity of the crime in Nigeria.
