OSINT Summary:
Police in Zanzibar arrested at least 42 suspects last week in connection to a night bomb blast targeted at the house of the Zanzibar Police Chief Hamden Omar Makame. The blast happened a few days prior to the presidential re-run held in March 21, 2016.
The arrested are said to have been opposing the re-run which opposing sides have thrown accusations on each other of voter’s intimidation and harassment using security forces especially by ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
Elsewhere in Zanzibar, reports indicate that people from Pemba Island have been seeking refuge in Kenya’s Mombasa and others moving into the forest owing to the looming standoff between the ruling party and the opposition as well as harassment from the security forces.
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania that has its own government. The presidential re-run happened under tight security on Sunday March 20, 2016 under very tight security regardless of the opposition boycotting the same.
