A terrorist suspect shot dead in a raid in Brussels on Tuesday has been identified as an Algerian national.
The terror suspect identified as Mohamed Belkaid was killed by snipers while trying to fire at police from an apartment window in Brussels suburb of Forest.
During the raid four police officers were wounded. Police are still hunting two suspects who were holed up in the apartment at the beginning of the operation but managed to escaped.
The Brussels police raid is linked to the ongoing investigations into the jihadist attacks in Paris that left 130 people killed in November 2015.
EVENT HIGHLIGHT
- Six police officers who included two French and four Belgian, go to a house in the Rue du Dries at 14:15 (13:15 GMT) local time.
- Police seal off the house, and when they opened the apartment door, they are fired at by at least two people.
- Three of the police officers are wounded but are able to retreat safely and call for back up.
- The assailants holed up in the apartment continue to fire at the officers.
- A suspect later identified as Mohamed Belkaid is killed by a police sniper as he tries to open fire from a window of the apartment. His body is later found in the flat. Beside him is a Kalashnikov and a book on Salafism
- Two other suspects believed to be holed up in the flat manage to escape the scene and a manhunt begins.
- Police raid another apartment in the Rue de l'Eau in Forest, conducts a search and recover a Kalashnikov. Further houses and car parking areas are searched with no results.
