February 26, 2016: Washington– US officials have confirmed that the Pentagon has commissioned a new aggressive cyber-attack campaign against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants.
The cyber campaign is targeted at eroding the group’s ability to exploit social media and generally the internet to recruit fighter, spread propaganda and inspire its followers.
This campaign is in a series of attack strategies against ISIS which aim in incorporating a wholesome anti-ISIS campaign that include combat, psychological warfare as well as on the cyber front that has proved very crucial in the groups spread of its ideologies.
The operations have been launched out of Fort Meade, Maryland are geared at disrupting ISIS online activities and their sympathizers with the end result of halting propaganda and videos distribution and social media recruitment.
Terrorist groups have used the internet as the main media of distributing propaganda, recruiting fighters both in their home-base countries and globally as they seek to advance their ideology and expand their network across the globe. A cyber counter attack will cut the supply of propaganda to inspire the followers and at the same time cut the supply of recruits/fighters for the terror network.
