Following a defence ministers meeting in Brussels, US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter confirmed that NATO is considering joining the US-led coalition against ISIL.
NATO agreed in principle to US request to deploy AWACS air surveillance aircraft to bolster the fight against ISIL group.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO planes would not be used directly in monitoring the militants group but would take the tasks of U.S. planes that would be re-tasked in gathering intelligence in Syria and Iraq.
