AU Special Representative for Somalia and Head of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Francisco Madeira has lauded the overall progress of the mission in Somalia headlined by both peace efforts and the political mileage that the Federal Government of Somalia has achieved.
Madeira said that the military operation conducted and the recapture of major cities and towns from the militants has created conducive environment for reconciliation, government formation and development of a tangible reality evidence mist recently by the electoral model recently released.
Somalia is expected to hold their general election later in 2016 with the responsibility to maintain the calm and optimum environment solely lying on AMISOM which has exuded their apt capability to ensure a fair and smooth election.
Madeira emphasized on a balance between military action and political reconciliation process to a holistically benefit Somalia.
He said, “Robust military action must go hand in hand with an equally robust, inclusive and effective political reconciliation process to win the hearts and minds of the population and ensure that the Somali people fully assume their political and security responsibilities at local, regional and national level”.
AMISOM have been active in Somalia since 2007 and have gradually brought peace, a functional central government and state governments with the aid of the troops contributing countries like regional neighbors Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia.
