President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday 1st February 2016 commissioned the modern police gears at GSU headquarters in Nairobi.
Police officers in terror prone areas are expected to receive the Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs). The APCs will be a milestone in securing the frontier areas of the country mostly targeted by the militants groups.
Several police officers especially in NEP Kenya and Coastal regions have been killed by ambushes by Al-Shabaab militants who plant roadside landmines, IEDs and firearms to attack the police.
Lamu and Mandera are among the counties set to benefit from the 30 armoured personnel carriers and other protective police gears recently purchased.
The armoured vehicles that were imported last week will be dispatched to various counties with volatile counties being given priority, police source confirmed.
Worst-hit areas in Lamu County include Bondhei, Pandanguo, Kiunga, Baragoi and Milimani while in Mandera, the Lafey, El Wak localities are targeted by Somali based Al-Shabaab.
The APCs will also boost the ongoing Operation Linda Boni which was started with primary goal of pursuing, flushing out and neutralizing Al-Shabaab militant’s threat.
