At least 14 Al Shabaab militants were killed in Mudug region by the Galmudug forces in a fight that ensured after the militants attempted to forcefully collect Zakah from the residents.
The battle came after militants in Harardheere attempted to collect Zakah (Islam tax on wealth) from the residents who put up a resistance front. The resident fought them with the help of Galmudug forces resulting to the killing of at least 14 al Shabaab and injuring many other that fled the gun battle.
State Minister of Galmudug confirmed the incident saying that among those killed were senior officials in al Shabaab. He also commended the forces for the good work as well as the prompt response that led to the killing of the militants.
According to analysts, the al Shabaab have lost the ground and the fear they instilled upon resident which has led to most residents in parts of Somalia resisting to pay Zakah as faith in the security forces and their ability to protect the civilians is gradually being restored.
