SOMALIA: Somalia government forces have managed to capture a senior commander of the Islamist jihadist group Al Shabaab in Central part of the war-torn country.
According to a military source in Somalia, Ali Yusuf Ganey, is a commander of the al-Qaeda-linked militant group, Al Shabaab. The militant was captured near the central town of Elbuur.
El-buur was once a major Al Shabaab stronghold until it was captured after a joint operation launched by AMISOM and government forces.
While addressing the media, Somali military commander Colonel Mohamed Kahiye said Ali Yusuf Ganey has committed grievous atrocities against innocent civilians, men, women and children and will be interrogated in Mogadishu for more leads and then will face justice.
The troubled horn of Africa country has been faced by civil war since 1991 and the country has struggled to fight the militants until the AU peacekeeping troops were deployed.
Though the militants still wage attacks against the government forces together with AMISOM peacekeepers, the militants have suffered significant blows that has dented the insurgent’s military capabilities.
From 2014, Federal government of Somalia for the first time in years appeared to get closer to stability after its forces and African Union forces drove members of Harakat al Shabaab al Mujahideen (HSM) movement from most of their strongholds.
