Security has been heightened by the government security troops in the agricultural-rich city of Jowhar.
Jowhar lies about 90 kilometers along a major road, north of Somali’s capital Mogadishu.
In an effort to curb Al Shabaab insurgency and thwart militant’s attempts to orchestrate attacks, the Friday 25th September 2015 security operations were intensified in the neighborhood of Jowhar town.
According to Jowhar deputy police commissioner, Gelle Warsame hundreds of police including military soldiers have been deployed to the entrance of the town to ensure the overall security in the town. Security checks in major roads have also been installed.
In an interview with a local media channel, Warsame said that the move to beef up security was meant to prevent Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab militants from orchestrating attacks in villages and within the town.
Al Shabaab have been fighting the International backed Somalia government with sole goal of overthrowing it and installing their Islamist Sharia Law. The militants in the past few weeks have intensified their hit and run guerilla attacks towards government and allied forces in Somalia.
Al Shabaab also targets crowded places, towns, institutions, marketplaces and this in mind the security operations launched in the town coincided with the Eid al-Adha celebrations in Somalia’s middle Shabelle regional capital of Jowhar.
