Tuesday 22nd September: The Federal Government of Somalia started implementing the long awaited reforms in the police and security sector with the commencement of Police officers’ salary payment.
The Somali Police Force has gone for months without pay and the move was welcomed the move terming it as morale-booster for the force.
Police Commissioner Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud witnessed the kickoff of the exercise in police stations in the capital Mogadishu. He said that he will closely monitor the process to ensure that the back log in payments is offset and a similar occurrence in the future is avoided.
Officers welcomed the move praising the current commissioner expressing optimism in him unlike his predecessors who failed to ensure their consistence pay.
The delayed or failure to pay the police officers has in the past jeopardized the operations of the police force who became demotivated and result to illegal and alternative wars to earn their income.
The reforms in the security sector are in line with the FGS’ agenda to create a strong police force with the capability to take over and maintain control of town and cities handed over from the AMISOM troops.
