- Mombasa authorities are holding three women over possibilities of links to an active Al Shabaab terror cell in Kenya’s North Eastern Province.
- The women were arrested at a police roadblock in Mtwapa on suspicion of transporting electronics and other items to Al-Shabaab militants in Garissa.
- Ms Nargis Arafat Gulan, Ms Mwanajuma Mweru Tayari and Ms Saumu Ali Athman will be detained at the Port Police Station for 30 days.
The three women were found ferrying a laptop, pocket phones with its charger, surveillance pen, external hard disk drives, military boots, earphones and screw drivers, allegedly used to commit terrorism activities in Garissa County.
Investigation into possibilities of their links to the terror group Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen will include retrieval and analysis of the recovered items by the Anti-Terror Police Unit in Nairobi.
Intelligence indicates that the materials need to be subjected to cybercrime units for further analysis.
Laws regarding issues related to terrorism allow a suspect to be detained for 90 days as amended by the Kenyan constitution following an increase in terror related issues in the country especially along the Kenya border with Somalia and in the country’s North Eastern Province.
