The government further renewed its call upon the United Nations Security Council to lift the arms embargo imposed on Libya as it was hampering the fight against the Islamic State Takfiri in the country.
Sirte that has been under the control of the Jihadist is the hometown of the slain former Libyan leader Gadhafi. Sirte that 450km from the capital Tripoli has experienced a lot of violence as the jihadist attempt to gain control amidst resistance from the local youth.
Libya has two rival government one based in the east and the other in Tripoli have also supported the fight against the IS takfiri that are attempting to establish a caliphate in the Maghreb country.
Sirte town has been experiencing heavy fighting the past week prompted the assassination of a Muslim prayer leader from the influential Al-Farjan tribe at the week start. The local youth that were fighting to keep away the jihadist in more than one occasion have been forced to retreat as they cannot get assistance from the government or military.
The Arab League led by Egypt has summoned an emergency meeting in the effect for Libya to be held on Tuesday. Egypt has been continuously lobbying for more active participation of the league and other international actors in the fight against Islamic State that is seeking to create a safe haven in Libya.
Egypt has in the first conducted multiple independent airstrikes of Daesh positions in Libya including a cell that killed 21 Egyptian hostages earlier in the year. The active participation of the Arab League will aid in the fight against the Islamic State especially countries like Egypt that recently received a squadron of F-16 fighter jets.
