Event
On Thursday 23rd July 2015, the Kenya Defense Forces troops alongside Somali troops landed a mightier offensive against the Somali based jihadist group, the Al Shabaab at their base in Dinsor.
Kenya Defence Forces, Air force increased airstrike bombardments while on the ground the army coordinated the operations. The militants took off after intense fighting that left KDF troops under the control of base. The troops are now conducting security operations to clear the town.
Second Achievement in a Week
The capture comes after days of intense battles between the jihadists and the Kenyan military, with KAF (Kenyan Air Force) providing aerial support and serving as a reconnaissance asset.
It also comes only a day after the fall of the town of Bardheere that had been in the grip of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al Shabaab militant group for more than 7 years.
Dinsor is a town in Somalia’s southwestern region and near the border with Kenya and Ethiopia. Both towns were some of the last remaining Al Shabaab strongholds.
Dinsor was one of Al Shabaab remaining strongholds which served as a strategic location in carrying out their operations. Its fall from the grip of the militants will therefore help stymie militant activities in Kenya’s north eastern region.
