Event Summary
US military on 21st July 2015 revealed the killing of a top Al Qaeda operative in airstrikes. According to the military spokesman, the US airstrikes on July 8 targeted Muhsin Al Fadhli, who was traveling in a vehicle. Muhsin Al Fadhli is responsible for many terrorist activities in areas targeted by the terrorist group.
Terrorist Muhsin Al-Fadhli
Prior to his death, Muhsin Al-Fadhli was the leader of a network of Al Qaeda operatives called the Khorasan Group.
Al-Fadhli was a senior Al-Qaida facilitator who was among the few trusted Al Qaeda leaders that participated in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
According to intelligence gathered, Al-Fadhli was also involved in terrorist attacks that took place in October 2002, including against U.S. Marines on Faylaka Island in Kuwait and on the French ship MV Limburg.
In 2012, the US State Department had offered a $7 million reward for information leading to the death or capture of Muhsin Al- Fadhli.
According to intercepted terrorist communication, Al Qaeda elements in Iran, led by Al-Fadhli were working to move fighters and money through Turkey to support Al Qaeda-affiliated elements in Syria.
Muhsin Al-Fadhli was also working on his extensive network of Kuwaiti jihadist donors to send money to Syria via Turkey.
Al Qaeda’s Khorasan Group
The Khorasan Group is a group of senior Al-Qaeda members who reportedly operate in Syria. The group is further reported to consist of a small number of fighters who are all on terrorist watch lists.
Intelligence has revealed that in terms of threat, Khorasan may pose as much of a danger as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) even though the Al Qaeda have in the past disassociated themselves from any actions accruing to ISIS.
The Khorasan are a violent group who plot and carry out external attacks against the United States and any of the States allies.
Forecast
The death of Muhsin Al-Fadhli will degrade and disrupt ongoing external operations of Al Qaeda against the United States and her allies.
