Police in Lamu have thwarted an attack from heavily armed militants who targeted a convoy of passenger buses that was headed to Mombasa.
Security personnel reported the Tuesday 7th 2015 attack that happened around 6.30pm near the town of Mpeketoni, an area of previous raids and massacres orchestrated by the Somali based and Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al Shabaab Islamist group. The militants opened fire at a convoy of passenger buses and their army escorts.
The militants were armed with grenades and heavy loaded guns. They ambushed the buses and started spraying the buses with bullets. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.
Working on intelligence, Kenyan security personnel have been able to respond timely and preempt possible attacks from the Islamic militants.
