According to Dr. Teepu Siddique, the common cause of the neurological disorder Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) has been found.
Dr. Siddique, the study senior author, told a university news release that it is now possible to identify the causes of ALS and test for drugs that can cure and manage it.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is fatal neurodegenerative disease that in most cases is hereditary, though caused by other factors.
Researchers point out that there are three types of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, sporadic, hereditary, and ALS.
The discovery shows that in all forms of the disease, the cause is common, a finding that can significantly boost efforts to find a cure besides enable researchers develop better diagnosis procedures.
The discovery is well documented in the August 2011 issue of the journal Nature, where the author explains how the cause is common target for drugs and forms of treatment for ALS.
