Proximity of Kenya’s NEP to the Kenya-Somali border makes the region more prone to Al Shabaab terrorist activities.
With the increasing terrorist activities in the NEP, intelligence reports have concluded that the region is an easy target to elements Somali based Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen on success of their cross-border incursions into Kenya.

Police killings in Garissa: Four police vehicles were burnt down in Yumbis village in Garissa in an incident in which one police officer was injured..
Invasion of Yumbis village: Open Source Intelligence reports on 21st May 2015 pointed out that a band of militants believed to be elements of Somali Islamist terror group Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen, attempted to takeover Yumbis village in Kenya’s North East.

Terror warning at a Mosque in Ijaara: On 19th May, 2015 heavily armed militia, suspected to be Al Shabaab, stormed two mosques in Ijara Sub-county in Garissa. They forced worshippers to listen for two hours to their ideology as they tried to stamp fear into locals before disappearing into a nearby forest.
Haamey village ambush: Somali based jihadists Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen militants attempted to ambush a Kenya Army Border Operations Special unit forward base.
The encounter with Kenya’s security personnel left more 26 of the militants killed.
