At least 900 Iraqi citizens are on trial in a court in Baghdad for links to the Islamic State after they were arrested fleeing Syria and into the country. Intelligence revealed that the court received “interrogation files for 900 Iraqi Daesh members” from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Iraqi authorities will try the suspected extremists in batches and they include very influential leaders, but Daesh had sought to keep them hidden. One of those who remain in SDF custody is a member of the group widely thought to have been instrumental in developing chemical weapons.
The SDF, backed by the US, has driven Daesh from areas in Eastern Syria, some of which borders Iraq. The last stronghold held by ISIS in Syria fell and was recaptured by allied forces a few weeks ago which led to the declaration on ISIS defeat in Syria.
