The Islamic State Central Africa Province’s (ISCAP) branch that is active in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) killed at least 30 Christians in three separate attacks in the North Kivu Region.
The three attacks are part of a campaign launched by the group in the country during the Holy month of Ramadhan. The attacks took place in the villages of Cocola, Luna, and Mufutabanagy in Beni city.
ISCAP claimed these attacks as part of a third wave of the Islamic State’s “Battle of Attrition” military campaign. The Islamic State launched this most recent wave on May 14 which involves wearing down their enemies by launching attacks on the security apparatus.
ISCAP which has a presence in DRC and Mozambique has been conducting more attacks with an evidential change in tactics and capabilities by both groups. Intelligence can attribute the shift to a suspected change in leadership with IS-Somalia being at the helm to consolidate ISIS’ affiliates in the Great Lakes Region.
