SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) has killed 17 ISCAP terrorists operating in Cabo Delgado province following an attack on their base in Chitama settlement in Nangade District. The weekend battle between the insurgents and SAMIM forces also left one soldier dead three others injured.
Additionally, the force engaged in gunfire with another group of terrorists south of the Messalo River. One insurgent was killed and three rifles confiscated. Another terrorist has also been captured and is being questioned.
The SAMIM Force was deployed to join the Rwandan Military to assist Mozambican efforts. Two districts have been secured by the RDF and residents have begun returning to their homes. The ISCAP insurgency has been terrorizing the residents as they oppose the establishment of the LNG project.
The gains made by the joint forces have proved promising and are expected to pave the way for the deployment of other CT strategies that will prevent the resurgence of the group by addressing the underlying causes of the violence. Residents are hopeful that while the military solution offers a reprieve to the dire situation, they hope that the Mozambican government will step up to improve the lives of the residents who occupy the resource-rich region.
