Somalia through a statement on Wednesday said that the seized weapon cache by Australian Navy was meant for Al-Shabaab militant group.

Australian Navy while carrying out counter-terrorism operations in the Middle East intercepted a fishing boat some 300 kilometers from Oman.

According to Abdirizak Omar, Somalia’s security minister, the operation by Australian Navy marked a new turning point and opened a new chapter for collaboration between the two countries in defeating terrorism.

Omar further said the government of Somalia has established with 100% certainty that the weapon cache seized was meant for Al-Shabaab without providing details on the haul’s investigation.

The navy team found 1,989 AK-47 assault rifles, 100 rocket propelled grenade launchers, 49 PKM general purpose machine guns, 39 PKM spare barrels and 20 60mm mortar tubes

The minister also lauded U.S. contribution in fighting the Al Qaeda affiliated terrorist group in Somalia citing the latest drone strike that struck the militant’s Raso training camp killing nearly 200 militants.
