The US military through its African Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that a drone strike conducted in southern Somalia towards the end of last years has killed 17 al Shabaab terrorists. The airstrikes were conducted in the south part of the country and they have been instrumental in foiling a would be deadly new year attack on an unidentified target in the capital and its environs.

Moreover, the strike destroyed a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, preventing it from being used against the people in Mogadishu.

A statement issued by the US military said that the US would persistently explore all the authorized and appropriate measures to protect herself, her partners and other interests by collaborating with the Federal government of Somalia to deny safe haven for all terrorists.
