5 Police Officers (1 OCS, and four police constables) were killed inside Kapenguria Police Station in West Pokot County in North-Western Kenya, when an Al-Shabaab terror suspect they were detaining (Omar Okwaki Eumond) grabbed a firearm from one officer and opened gunfire.
Initial assessment on the event show’s terrorist Omar Okwaki planned his escape from the cells and that he was well trained in handling and dispensing different types of firearms.
It’s not yet clear how he made out of the holding cells and outdid an officer and subsequently outgunned the rest.
The attack happens, barely 24hrs after Harakat Al-Shabaab Mujahideed Emir Sheikh Ahmad Abu Ubeidah issued an audio-visual message on online media urging terrorists to fight on and free themselves.
Government dispatched a rapid response team drawn from the Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) and and General Service Unit (GSU-RECCE) to the station to conduct a mop-up.
