Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru on Wednesday said that students will who wish to join public Universities in Kenya shall be subjected to student military training.
This comes at a time when Kenya is still healing from the Garissa Massacare which left 147 students dead in the hands of the Al Shabaab militia group in Somalia.
The training which is still a subject to be debated on by the Ministry of Education was first requested by the parents association in Kenya. Student military training should be considered following the rise to create awareness on how to combat insecurity and terrorism in Kenya.
According to Waiguru, the paramilitary training for the students is still a proposal which is yet to be decided upon once relevant bodies come into a conclusion.
The call for this student military training is as a result of the latest incident where student were injured at the University of Nairobi Kikuyu Campus stampede that left one dead.
This announcement comes only a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta affirmed Kenyans on intensified against terrorism in Kenya.
Another measure which has been taken up by the government is the commencement of construction of the security wall on Kenya’s territorial land bordering Kenya and Somalia.
This was is set to improve security across the border following the several attacks which have affected northern parts of Kenya by Islamist terrorists Al Shabaab.
In as much as student military training will focus on improving Kenya’s security, the government has further called upon young Kenyans to shun away from efforts to join militant groups across the world.
