As the fight against the radical group which has taken control of major parts of Iraq and Syria intensifies, Canadian lawmakers have officially joined the war against ISIS following their Monday’s vote for campaign of airstrikes against the radicals.
The House of Commons on Monday pushed through a motion geared towards a joint forces war against the Islamic militants amidst opposition by a section of the members.
According to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the move by Canada to join the fight in Iraq and Syria will ensure that Canada minimizes chances of the terrorist threats in their country and abroad.
Canada, which first joined the US-led airstrikes on ISIS sometime in November 2014, currently enjoys its air campaign which was authorized until March 30, 2016.
The extremists have in several occasions issued threats towards Canada through the videos they upload from time to time. This was therefore one of the major reasons as to why Canada had to join the fight to protect its nationals.
Some of the ISIS instilled attacks which have occurred in Canada include the Ottawa attack and in Quebec which a number of Canadians died and scores were left injured.
The opposition however indicated that the move would push Canada into a long-terms regional conflict which would take longer than expected to be resolved. The group further adds that this may be interpreted as Canada’s support towards current president Bashar al-Asaad.
So far, Canada has deployed a number of Special Forces which they are certain that the forces would train the Kurds in Northern Iraq in the airstrikes on the ISIS dens in Iraq and Syria.
