Intelligence sources report a surge in radicalization of youths in North Eastern and Coastal areas of Kenya.
An analysis on the trend show that Muslim youths are joining radical groups as a respite for joblessness and protest to state incapacity to create opportunities.
Joblessness is the key factor, and young men are joining the terror group Al-Shabaab in alarming rates particularly in Mombasa and Garissa.
Mombasa alone hosts dozens of terror cells which have direct links with key radical Islamic teachers who use Mosques to induct youths to the movement.
There is need to liaise with the society to increase facilitation of criminal profiling. This will go a long way to help police officers identify the links/connections between terror actors and youths recently inducted to engage in such activities.
Youths are joining Al-Shabaab since they have been promised jobs. The terror group has promised military jobs as they prepare to renew attempts to make attacks on government troops and gain ground in Somalia.
Kenya has made gains in stemming the threat of terrorism, however, the challenge remains high, the terrorists strategy is evolving and when they chance on a soft target, they attack.
These new recruits are being tasked with roles such as identifying targets and attacking the targets and getting away.
The youths, as far as the mission is not suicide or hardly threatens their lives, they will work for these terrorists.
