At least 60 people were killed in a fresh wave of violence in West Darfur in Sudan after armed militants targeted a local community. Around 500 armed men attacked Masteri Town, north of Beida, in Darfur targeting the members of the Masalit community, looting and burning houses and part of the local market.
his was one of the latest of a series of security incidents reported over the last week that left several villages and houses burned, markets and shops looted, and infrastructure damaged.
Intelligence indicates that Sudanese prime minister s set to send troops and police in the region to address the recent insurgencies of violence in the area that has been the theatre of conflict since 2003. The land conflict in the area has led to the deaths of thousands of people and local farmers were on returning to their farms following relative calm. Violence in Darfur has eased since Bashir’s ouster by the army amid mass protests against his rule last year. The government and a coalition of nine rebel groups, including factions from the region, signed a preliminary peace deal in January.
The continued tribal clashes in various parts of Sudan have been putting pressure on the transitional government and could impede the socio-economic and political advancement in the country following the ouster of president Omar el Bashir.
