The UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2158 (2014) extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) until August 31, 2020. The mandate was previously extended until 30th June 2020 giving the mandate an extra ninety days in the Horn of Africa Nation.
The move is geared at maintaining security and stability in Somalia with quarterly reports submitted to the UN especially in terms of political progress ahead of elections as well as security and CT ahead of the scheduled AMISOM exit.
Notably, the mission which was established in 2013 has been involved in brokering truces and alliances between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the federal states. The effective and symbiotic relationship between the two is fundamental in the maintenance of sustainable security and peace solution in a country that has been fighting al Qaeda and ISIS-affiliated terror organizations scattered across the various states.
The UNSOM supports Somalia’s government’s efforts to implement the country’s National Strategy and Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism to strengthen Somalia’s capacity to prevent and counter-terrorism.
